5 Minutes with Nick Riley

Our people are pivotal to the game-changing work we do at Truman.

From our directors right through to our contractors, our success is a result of the hard work, teamwork and expertise of everyone working under the Truman brand.

In these short articles, we’re going to speak to some of the people at the heart of Truman’s work. This week we’re Sitting down with Technical Manager, Nick Riley.

Tell us a bit about your role

As technical manager, I deal with the compliance side of things. That means building control, planning, fire regulations and all the statutory requirements that are required to sign a building off.

I also work with clients and the design team to ensure projects fall in line with the specifications and contractor proposals we have in place.

What’s been your journey with Truman

I started in the industry in 1991, working as a site engineer. After doing this for 3 years, I moved into a quantity surveyor role for several different construction firms across the North West.

I was involved with Truman from the outset. I had worked extensively with Dave Wheeler at previous companies and he got in contact to say he, and some of the other Directors at fit out contractor Medlock, were setting up a design and build business. They asked me to come on board as Design Manager and the rest is history.

What’s special about working at Truman

At Truman, everyone is deeply invested in the work. When a job arrives, everyone is eager to leave their mark and produce the best possible service and end-product for our clients. Part of this is down to us being a smaller outfit where everyone has the opportunity to step up and be accounted for, but the bigger part is down to the great team we have in place.

We’re professional in everything we do, but that doesn’t stop our office and our sites from being great places to work. The atmosphere is always upbeat and that has a big motivating factor.

What does it mean to be a game-changer?

To approach the whole process with a completely different philosophy. We don’t subscribe to the adversarial nature construction is known for. We work collaboratively with clients and sub-contractors to get the best possible results. Our analytical and common-sense approach to design means we’re able to make suggestions that can save clients money, remove obstacles and decrease build time, all without sacrificing quality.

What keeps you busy outside of work

It's all about football for me. I’m firmly in the red camp of Manchester so I keep a close eye on how Ole’s boys are doing. As well as being an avid fan, I keep fit playing a couple of times a week (I’ve not had to hang up my boots just yet). I also coach an under 14s youth team playing in the East Manchester League, so it’s safe to say a lot of my time outside of work is spent on the beautiful game.

That’s the end of our five minutes with Nick. Be sure to check back next month for another instalment.
